In het laatste novemberweekend stelden het Maagdenhuis en 29 andere kunst- en culturele locaties in Antwerpen centrum het werk van 50 nieuwe talenten van TO BE 23 voor. Het werk 'Collars' van de Ijslandse kunstenaar Arni Jonsson is nog te zien tot 8 januari.

Arni Jonsson is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar die vooral werkt met hout en digitale media in de vorm van installaties. Zijn kunst wordt gekenmerkt door humor en een recht-door-zee aanpak. Inspiratie vindt Arni in het verleden en in zijn fantasie.
Arni Jonsson maakt exclusief voor het Maagdenhuis het werk ‘Collars / Kragen / Kragar’. Het werk is te zien op onze binnenkoer tijdens het To Be Antwerp-weekend en daarna nog tot 8 januari 2024. Over zijn werk vertelt de artiest:
“The main visual representation of the girls who lived in Maagdenhuis was their orphan uniform : a woollen dress, linen undershirt, pinafore and a large white collar. Joannes De Maré’s paintings depicted these girls engaged in their duties : sewing, lace-making, and tending to household tasks. Mannequins now model imitations of those uniforms and there’s Clara, a wooden statue embodying an orphan girl wearing the same clothes. The white collar immediately stood out to me. I imagined the girls tending to their uniforms, maintaining their condition. Over time, the collars must have taken on traces of their activities, maybe offering a glimpse into their character and individuality. Each collar, despite its uniformity, is unique”.
